We are a fast-growing 100% virtual tenant rights law firm that helps California tenants who have been illegally evicted, discriminated against, harassed, or forced to endure uninhabitable living conditions recover money from their landlords.  We are seeking to hire a rock star Negotiating Attorney this quarter who can hit the ground running.

The primary responsibility of the Negotiating Attorney is to oversee the prosecution of a portfolio of matters, working as part of a team or “Pod” consisting of at least two Paralegals and one or more Case Management Assistants.

This position will be responsible for critically important work, including:

  1. Acting as the responsible attorney for a portfolio of matters;
  2. Leading a Daily Huddle with the rest of the Pod;
  3. Meeting with clients during onboarding meetings and giving them legal advice, as needed;
  4. Providing legal advice to clients with questions that the Paralegals cannot answer;
  5. Reviewing the work product of the Paralegals;
  6. Negotiating settlements with opposing counsel and insurance adjusters;
  7. Representing clients at hearings;
  8. Recording productive time in the firm’s case management system;
  9. Assisting in the creation and/or revision of the firm’s policies, systems, and procedures to ensure efficient operations,
  10. Assisting with the training of new Negotiating Attorneys, as needed; and
  11. Attending weekly attorney roundtables, weekly team meetings, weekly Lunch & Learns, monthly matter valuation meeting, and quarterly action planning sessions focused on the Negotiating Attorney’s personal, professional, and financial goals.

If the following statements describe you, then you

  1. You have plenty of experience negotiating (and you enjoy it).
  2. Your approach with opposing adjusters/attorneys is aggressive but practical.  When interacting with opposing counsel, you believe in the Golden Rule.
  3. You believe in the firm’s commitment to work-life balance but are nonetheless prepared to arrive early, stay late, and work on weekends when necessary to get the job done.
  4. You have an empathetic and understanding manner with clients.
  5. You have great attention to detail.  You proofread documents and emails; can spot and fix grammar errors, spelling errors, typos, formatting errors, etc.; you do not let important details slip through the cracks or derail a project.
  6. You expect personal performance and team performance to be nothing short of the best.
  7. You are trustworthy, do not cut corners ethically, earn trust and maintain confidences when appropriate, and, most importantly, do what is right, not just what is expedient.
  8. You are innovative, growth-minded, can generate new and creative approaches to problems, and can maximize value and use of technology and other resources.
  9. You can act without being told what to do and bring new ideas to the CEO.
  10. You work at a fast pace with the ability to move between tasks quickly, are not overwhelmed with volume or by deadlines, and spend time on tasks that add value.
  11. You develop and nurture productive and professional relationships with clients and staff, and are both approachable yet stern when the circumstances require.
  12. You are self-directed, able to assess a situation and determine what needs to be done and then do it.
  13. Your middle name is “No Drama.”
  14. You are an awesome juggler of tasks and can change gears quickly.
  15. You do not think of any task as “beneath you.”

While we do not have a minimum years-in-practice requirement, we believe an attorney with civil litigation experience in California courts (preferably plaintiff-side), skilled at negotiations, and who speaks and writes Spanish would be an ideal candidate.  The Negotiating Attorney must be an active member of the State Bar of California with a discipline-free record.  The Negotiating Attorney must be able to manage a portfolio of matters, lead a team, take initiative on work that needs to be done, and complete tasks with minimal handholding.  The ideal candidate will have a positive attitude and sense of humor, and be willing to follow policies, systems, and procedures.

We are open to starting this role on a part-time basis (20-30 hours per week) and transitioning into full-time.  Work will be done 100% virtually.  Total compensation includes bonuses tied to the achievement of objective quarterly milestones (in full compliance with California law and the California Rules of Professional Conduct); open (unlimited) PTO; health, dental, and vision benefits after sixty days of full-time employment; paid holidays (ten days per year), and paid sick leave in accordance with state law; payment of California State Bar annual fees; CLE credit through weekly Lunch & Learns offered at no charge by the firm; and a 401(k) retirement plan with a mandatory employer contribution after one year of employment.

Pursuant to the San Francisco Fair Chance Ordinance, we will consider for employment qualified applicants who reside in the City and County of San Francisco with arrest and conviction records.

About The Firm

Founded in January 2016, Tenant Law Group is dedicated exclusively to the representation of renters, helping California tenants who have been illegally evicted, harassed, or forced to endure unlivable conditions recover money from their landlords.  Law Firm 500 has recognized Tenant Law Group as among the 100 fastest growing law firms in the United States every year since its first year of eligibility in 2019 (#22 in 2019, #12 in 2020, #40 in 2021, #78 in 2022, and #58 in 2023). Tenant Law Group has been honored as one of the Inc. 5000’s fastest-growing private companies in the United States in both 2022 (#3,448), and 2024 (#3,005).  Our clients are California renters who are experiencing any type of dispute with their landlord.  We have offices in San Francisco (headquarters), Oakland, and Los Angeles—with plans to expand to additional locations in 2025.  We are committed to the work we do for our clients, but we don’t take ourselves too seriously and really value professional development and team building.  Here is our mission statement:

Tenant Law Group is dedicated to helping California renters who have been harassed, injured, discriminated against, illegally evicted, or forced to endure inhumane living conditions.  We are committed to the ideal that all tenants, regardless of financial resources, are entitled to legal representation.  While our clients include renters from all backgrounds, we are especially dedicated to those who are most vulnerable—namely, the indigent, the seniors, immigrants, blue-collar workers, and individuals with disabilities.  We believe in doing well by doing good, understand the high demand for tenant rights legal services in California generally and in the Bay Area in particular, and therefore aim to grow our firm as rapidly as possible to serve the approximately eighteen million renters in California.  We treat our clients with dignity and respect, and value the personal and professional development of everyone in our organization.  Our core values are justice, compassion, professionalism, hard work, and innovation.  Tenant Law Group is an equal opportunity employer.
